Title: The Outlaws of Sherwood Forest
Author: Robin McKinley

A retelling of the Robin Hood legend, this book portrays Robin and Marian, as well as a new friend, Much, as teenagers, just beginning to find their way. In this version, Robin is a woodsman, but it's Marian who is the archer (she takes Robin's place in the famous tournament) and acts as a leader for the Merry Men. It's Marian who encourages a reluctant outlaw Robin to steal from the rich and give to the poor, and to become a symbol for the others to follow. (There is also a second heroine to this tale, whom I absolutely adored from the moment she appeared, but that would ruin the surprise.) For anyone who always suspected "Maid Marian" was stronger than she looked, this book is sure to please.

Marian is a beautiful red-headed Browncoat (Firefly/Serenity fan) from Alaska who is also a singer/song-writer of the Independent variety. She has a new album out, called got to fly. The first song on the album is for us, the geek girls of the world: I'll Still Be a Geek... Because If I am a misfit then I'm in good company, with Auden, Austen, Hawking, Galileo and Van Gogh, and countless other weirdos whom you really ought to know! Check her out at MarianCall.com!

The theme song for this comm is the second on that album, She's a Good Old Girl, for every spaceship, car, boat and heroine ever scarred by war, time and life in general. As Zoe said, of herself and of the ship Serenity, "She's tore up plenty, but she'll fly true."

I just agreed to start tutoring my friend's 2nd grade sister in reading. I've only taught secondary English but I know I can handle this - I just need a little guidance with materials. She is going to be repeating the year due to her poor reading skills. He says that she loves fantastical stories...especially "princess" stuff.

Can anyone recommend good books for the 2nd grade level that might catch her interest? Anything romantic/fantasy would be good. Also, I feel it's my duty as a role model to introduce her to stories with stronger heroines that aren't always the typical "damsel in distress" which I think sends a horrible message to little girls if that's all they are exposed to (and my friend agrees). I know if it has the fantasy elements she likes she would still like stronger heroines since she refused to leave the room when her brother saw the japanese anime "Revolutionary Girl Utena" which turns the typical fairy tale upside down.

Please post your suggestions ASAP so I can start collecting books!!!

Thanks!

Wow, awesome comm! Jerie? Wenona? Sarah, Marina? Anybody here?
Well, I'd like to join, even if I'm late and ya'll have already moved on to each saving the world her own way...

  1. Your real first name: Lora (really, I'm not that creative!)
  2. Your geographical location: Texas, US
  3. Age: 33
  4. Occupation: Systems Engineer (because it sounds better than Political Engineer!)
  5. Dream job: Astronaut
  6. Cause most passionate about: Freedom (Amen, Marina!)
  7. What's your best personality characteristic?: Perseverance
  8. What's your worst?: Demanding
  9. Favorite Fictional Heroines: Morgaine (C.J. Cherryh's moreso than MZB's), Ellen Ripley (of the Alien movie series), Captain Signy Mallory of the jump-carrier Norway (again, C.J. Cherryh's), Zoe Washburn (actually, all the women of Firefly/Serenity, even the villains)
  10. Favorite Non-Fictional Heroines: Valentina Tereshkova, Sally Ride, Benazir Bhutto, Amelia Earhart
  11. Favorite Girl-Power Movie: Aliens, really.
  12. What has been your most heroic moment so far: Nothing dramatic, every time I don't give up, every time I keep going even though it's hard, I lead the life of a person who might inspire others. College 1100 miles from home, followed by five years in the Navy, then a return to the vicinity of the Johnson Space Center to find a job (which I did), and now going to school at night while working full time as an engineer. Not quitting, not going back to where I grew up, even though it might be easier. Those are my heroic moments.
